Why Use Tables Snakes?
I have used this with great success with students who for various reasons have struggled learning times tables. For example, many have lacked confidence or felt inadequate, humiliated or anxious when faced with timed tables tests. Many have already begun to convince themselves that they 'can't do' maths or they are not a 'maths person'. This resource gives them back control over their learning.
What sort of outcomes can be achieved using Tables Snakes?
Many see patterns they didn't know existed and for the first time begin to appreciate the beauty in maths. After that, they love the challenge of covering all the multiples, which isn't at all scary because they can peep under a counter if they forget one. Once they get past covering the first few 'easy' multiples and begin to realise that they can and will remember all 12 multiples the look on their faces changes from scepticism to excitement! Some are even able to recite the multiples in reverse order!
In addition, the visual map created by the snake gives students a great basis for learning the facts out of order. The instruction booklet explains how to use the snakes and provides tips for helping students to recall individual facts out of order.
